Momma's Homestead Rules

Despite all the fun, sometimes things stink. For me, anyway, it helps to poke fun at the hard stuff. Never give up. That’s the final lesson. Like Charlie here, he finally learned to stay out of the coop. Good dog.

1. Predator proof everything. Then double proof. Then triple proof.

2. The predators will eventually out smart you anyway.

3. You will always lose your best animals first.

4. Whatever you think might go wrong, will go wrong. And even whatever you can’t even envision might go wrong, will go wrong.

5. Always have extras of everything on hand, because everything will break, usually all at once.

6. That friendly dog will eat your baby chicks, duckies, bunnies.

7. Yes, it WILL snow after you plant.

8. You will always end up with too many animals.

9. Having too many animals means that all of them will get sick, the best ones first.

10. Have a plan for your poop. Because you will lots more than you ever imagine.

11. Poop is good- as long as it’s composted downwind.

12. Don’t name too many animals because you WILL have to eat them.

13. No matter how well you plan, it will get messed up.

14. That good female animal will get bred by a male that you didn’t plan for, every time. Even when you had them all separated in ways they could not possibly meet up.

15. Those babies will figure out a way to kill themselves. Usually just before you sell them.

16. The pen will find a way to flood when you are gone all day.

17. Just when you are producing really good chicks, a new disease will appear that kills chicks.

18. That incubator will die just as you are ready to hatch those eggs.

19. Just as you are ready to sell your babies at a decent price, another seller comes along to sell the same at a pittance.

What are your rules?
