Keeping Ducks without the Muck

Ducks are super fun, useful and great additions to the sustainable homestead. Not only do they forage well, they are both meat and egg producers. But many are afraid to add ducks because of the muddy mess. Yes, ducks can be messy. I’m talking a toddler-with-a-sugar-buzz-in-the-mud messy. But I have a few easy strategies to eliminate or at least minimize the muck factor.

As you will see in my short video, I simply dug a small drainage area. Well, technically, I hired a strong kid to dig the area, but the end result was the same-less muck in my coop run. And even more importantly, less smell. Yes, less SMELL! In fact, my ducks are nearly smell-less when I put in this drainage. O ya, I have about 14(?) ducks/Muscovy in my coop/run, so they are capable of making a pretty big stink.

My reducing muck and smell strategy with ducks.
